Assholes on Cell Phones
Last Thursday I was sitting at a red light waiting for it to turn green. It had just turned green and everyone was just starting to move. When the next thing I know, BAM. I get slammed into by a Hyundai Santa Fe. The guy gets out with one of the bluetooth headsets in his ear. I had passed him earlier and his driving wasn't the best. So I assume he was on a cell phone.
We exchange information and he calls his insurance company, since he was at fault. There was no sound of screeching tires or anything like that. I call a friend from work and ask him to follow me home to make sure my bumper doesn't fall off in the process of getting there. After a few hours the adjuster stops by to assess the damages. After a few days they finally got back to me and said my truck was totaled. I tried to get them to say otherwise, because I'm not in the most ideal financial situation to be able to afford a car payment.
I talked to the insurance regulator here in Florida and was told that when a car is totaled then you can never get it titled in the state of Florida. I think this is to prevent insurance fraud, they total a brand new car and then a person can buy it for really cheap and make simple repairs. After that I decided 10 years was enough on the truck, even though I'm sure I could have gotten another 100k miles on it quite easily.
After some car shopping and a bit of haggling with the dealership I picked myself up a new Honda Civic. It's nice, I've only had it for 2 days so far. Better gas mileage then my truck with a few added features.
